Ben Bernanke’s 2009 Commencement Speech at Boston College School of Law
Chairman of the Board of Governors of the United States Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke gave a commencement speech at Boston College School of Law last May 22, 2009. In his speech, Bernanke surely disappointed some businessmen because he did not revealed any Fed special plans on rescuing the economy of the United States. Instead he assured his listeners that “restoring economic prosperity and maximizing economic opportunity are the central focus of our efforts at the Fed”.
In addressing the Boston’s new lawmakers, Bernanke advised them to be optimistic and flexible. He said that there are certain things in life that are beyond one’s control such as challenges and opportunities that may come our way. To make the most of the opportunities that life has given, the graduates must be prepared and be open in dealing it. He also stressed out that they must test their self-imposed limits for it increases one’s capacity to face much bigger challenges. To illustrate his ideals Bernanke relayed his own life story, from a simple kid to the economic policy lawmaking career in Fed.
Surprisingly, the Fed chairman cracked a joke at the end of his speech, “And perhaps you will advise next year’s class to invite J. K. Rowling.”
